History of the Montreal Jazz Big Band

Gathered around its founder, Philippe Hudon, the 16 musicians forming the Montréal Jazz Big Band have been sharing their common passion for jazz music for the past 12 years.

Since its founding, the Montréal Jazz Big Band has distinguished itself on Quebec’s most renowned scenes and participated in several television and radio recordings for the CBC and, more recently, for the ARTV network.

The repertoire developed by its conductor and arranger, Philippe Hudon, has enabled the band to be equally appreciated by crowds of all sorts and to be active in the fields of both concert music and quality entertainment such as festivals, fundraising events, galas and various social and corporate events.

In particular, the orchestra has been seen at: the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, the Off-Festival de Jazz de Montréal, the Cabaret du Casino de Montréal in the production « Sinatra Remembered » (90 shows), La Ronde’s Jardin des Étoiles during the 2002 edition of the Mondial SAQ (18 shows), the Festival International d’Orford, the Capitol de Québec with Gilbert Bécaud and pianist Oliver Jones, the Festival des Couleurs du Mont-Tremblant, the Club Soda de Montréal with Ranee Lee, Michel Donato, Denzal Sinclaire, Paulo Ramos, etc.

In November 2001, the Montreal Jazz Big Band received recognition and was awarded by the Conseil québécois de la musique the 2001 Opus Prize for Best Jazz Concert of the Year for its June 29 performance, earlier that year, at the Off-Festival de Jazz de Montréal.

On July 21, 2002, a record number of 5,000 spectators came to cheer the Big Band at the Festival International de Lanaudière, which represents an unprecedented success in ticket sales for the event.

In addition to the traditional big band jazz repertoire, the Montreal Jazz Big Band has developed a more modern repertoire, in collaboration with young Canadian composers and arrangers. Its repertoire also includes Afro-Cuban music.
